Biological dark matter : ウィキペディア英語版 | Biological dark matter Biological dark matter is an informal, or metaphoric expression, that has different meanings in biology depending on the context. The expression is most often used when referring to non-coding DNA (junk DNA) and to non-coding RNA. Much of the genomic dark matter is thought to originate from ancient transposable elements and from other low-complexity repetitive elements. The expression is sometimes used when referring to the 99% of all living microorganisms that biologists are unable to culture and grow in a laboratory, so little functional insights exist about the metabolic potential of these organisms. It is also used sometimes for uncategorized genetic material found in humans and in several other species. That is, their phylogenetic novelty could indicate the cellular organisms or viruses from which they evolved. ==See also==
